Mummering is an age old tradition of song and story, performed each year by a group of local musicians and actors in disguise, who visit homes in a locality. If the mummers are welcomed into a house, they do a variety of informal performances including dance, music, jokes. The hosts must guess the mummers’ identities before offering them food or drink and / or a cash tip! Mummering dates back centuries to the Middle Ages, originating in Rome, before extending into Ireland and from there to Newfoundland in the 19th Century and beyond. The tradition has seen a revival in current times and The Fingal Mummers, who travel around the north county Dublin communities and in the vicinity of IrelandsEye Knitwear, has been formally recognised as one of the key elements of Ireland’s Living Cultural Heritage. Mummers’ traditional disguises range from their pointed straw hats,to crafted knits with be-ribboned and fringed finishes. Cocooning outer layers keep the wearer warm,whilst concealing their identity. Be careful, however, not to commit that rookie Mummer error and give the game away with familiar footwear!
